Gaining or Losing a Dependent Qualifies You for a Special Enrollment Period
Gaining a dependent or losing one is a qualifying life event that can trigger a Special Enrollment Period. This means you would be able to switch health insurance plans if you wish to during a 60-day period.
A dependent is someone who relies on you for financial support. Dependents could be a child, a parent, or niece or nephew, or really anyone who is related to you. This would NOT include a significant other of a family member who is not bound by marriage to you, or who has been divorced from a family member.
Typically, reasons for gaining a dependent include:
- Birth or adoption of a child;
- A relative moving in with you for you to financially support; or
- Marriage to one of your existing dependents;
Reasons for losing a dependent can include:
- Death of a dependent;
- A dependent moving out of your home and gaining their own financial support;
- Divorce from a dependent or family member who is a dependent;
- A child turning 26
In order for an event like one of these to trigger a Special Enrollment Period, you will likely be required to show documents as proof of the qualifying event, whether you apply online or offline. This documentation will likely need to be the same as the documents you would need to file your taxes, or a letter from your carrier documenting loss of coverage due to a death, or a child reaching maximum age for coverage (26).
