Marriage or Divorce Qualify You for a Special Enrollment Period
Getting married or divorced are both qualifying life events.
This means that from the legal date of the marriage or divorce, you will have a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. During this time you can select a new health plan for you and your new spouse, or find one for yourself, depending on your preferences and situation.
If you and your new spouse do not want to share a plan and would rather have separate plans, that’s no problem. Sometimes due to health conditions or simply preference, spouses will not want to be on the same plan. If this is the case, you can still use getting married as the qualifying event to get into this Special Enrollment Period to get separate plans.
